Simon Coter has announced the release of Oracle Linux 9.0, a major update of Oracle's Linux distribution designed for enterprise use. This is the company's first stable release based on the all-new Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 9.0: "Oracle is pleased to announce Oracle Linux 9 general availability for Intel-64/AMD-64 (x86_64) and Arm (aarch64). This release includes the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 7 (UEK R7), also generally available today, along with the Red Hat Compatible Kernel (RHCK). Oracle Linux is an optimized and secure operating environment for application development and deployment. Oracle Linux 9 with UEK R7 provides kernel, performance and security enhancements including UEK R7, based on the mainline long-term support (LTS) 5.15 release, offers the latest hardware support and is aligned with the Linux kernel community for more timely delivery of critical fixes and security updates. This release includes core scheduling, a security feature to help avoid side-channels attacks; adds CTF (C-type format) debug info data as part of the core kernel installation." Simon Coter has announced the availability of the first update in the Oracle Linux 9 series, a distribution built from the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 9.1 source code but featuring Oracle's (optional) "Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK)": "Oracle Linux 9 Update 1 for the 64-bit Intel and AMD (x86_64) and 64-bit Arm (aarch64) platforms is generally available today. This release is 100% application binary compatible with corresponding Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 Update 1 release. This Oracle Linux 9 release includes the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 7 (UEK R7). UEK R7 is based on the upstream Linux Kernel 5.15 and is supported on both Oracle Linux 9 and Oracle Linux 8. Oracle Linux 9 Update 1 reintroduces Application Stream modules and includes bug and security fixes, and feature updates. The most important changes are in the areas of security and development tools. Security: OpenSSH supports setting the minimum RSA key length; crypto-policies enforce the OpenSSH 2048-bit RSA key length minimum by default; OpenSSL option supports SHA-1 for signatures; keylime package is available." What to choose between Rocky Linux vs Oracle vs RHEL vs Centos Stream. Presently running a Centos 7 small server. Due to changes in how Centos Stream works, I'm looking for alternatives within the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) environment. This is not a sponsored video in any way! Centos Stream changes 🤍 Rocky Linux (Centos alternative) 🤍 Oracle Linux 🤍 Other options are Debian or Ubuntu Server or Suse but I prefer a RHEL type system for now. Rocky Linux was made after the Centos changes where announced as far as I know. It's a clone of Centos / RHEL basically with rebranding at this stage. Oracle Linux install just as well and I might use that if Rocky has problems. RHEL looks like it has a 16 node licensing included with their developer program but they were asking too much marketing useful info in my opinion. So I didn't even try to install RHEL at all.
