The blast on Europe's longest bridge - a symbol of Russia's annexation of the peninsula from Ukraine in 2014 - killed three people, Russian investigators said. This combined rail-road bridge is located in the Kerch Strait, the strait that connects the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. The Crimean Bridge, therefore, connects the Kerch Peninsula of Crimea and the Taman Peninsula of Russia's Krasnodar Krai, which is, as you might guess, a very important geostrategic point. The scope of the project included the construction of two parallel bridges: a 16.9 km long road bridge and an 18.1 km long railway bridge. The announcement that Russia will build a road-railway bridge over the sea was given by Vladimir Putin on March 19th, 2014, just a day after the infamous referendum on which Crimean citizens voted to fall under Russia. After fast and efficient construction, on 15th May 2018, Vladimir Putin led a convoy of trucks across the bridge, driving one himself, in an inauguration ceremony. Of course, the construction and opening of the Crimean Bridge caused a sharply negative reaction from Ukraine, which considers this construction illegal. In addition, the United States and the European Union also condemned the construction and opening of the bridge and imposed sanctions on the companies involved in its construction. Russia says it has detained eight people in connection with Saturday's explosion on a key bridge linking Russia to Crimea. Its FSB security service said five of those held were Russians, while the others were Ukrainian and Armenian. Russia’s Belgorod region came under attack by a “large number” of drones on Tuesday night, according to the governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov. The governor also said that the village of Terezovka in the Borisovsky district came under shellfire from the Ukrainian military. Crimean Bridge Attack Today | Crimea Base Explosion Aftermath | Russia Vs Ukraine War Update Today The Kerch bridge from Russia to Crimea, a hated symbol of the Kremlin’s occupation of the southern Ukrainian peninsular and one of Vladimir Putin’s prestige projects, has been hit by a massive explosion. Images from the bridge showed a fiercely burning fire engulfing at least two railway carriage from a train on the bridge, accompanied by a vast column of black smoke. The explosion, which witnesses said could be heard kilometres away, took place around 6am on Saturday while a train was crossing the bridge, although it was not immediately clear what caused it. Some images appeared to show a second fire at some distance from the main blaze. As the war in Ukraine rages, Russia has deployed several countermeasures to protect the Kerch Strait bridge. Russia has deployed decoy barges covered in radar reflectors as well as smokescreen capabilities, that were used in tests over the weekend. Experts claim the recent developments are meant to protect the strategically significant bridge from a missile attack. Russian anti-terrorism officials said that a large fire on the bridge linking Russia and Crimea was caused by an exploding truck. The blast "set fire to seven oil tankers being carried by rail to Crimea," Russian news agencies cited the national anti-terrorism committee as saying. Russia has launched a criminal probe into the event. "According to preliminary information a fuel tank was on fire on one of the sections of the Crimean bridge, the shipping arches are not damaged," RIA reported citing a local official. The tank was being pulled by a train. There have been no deaths or injuries reported so far. The road running along that part of the bridge was also badly damaged, according to the reports. The Crimean city of Simferopol announced that they were considering putting in place a ferry connection. Russia has officially launched direct passenger train service to the annexed territory of Crimea, using a rail route that bypasses mainland Ukraine. People can now travel from Saint Petersburg southward toward the Crimean city of Sevastopol. The journey lasts 44 hours and crosses the Crimean Bridge, which Moscow is accused of building illegally over the Strait of Kerch. Russian President Vladimir Putin rode along a section of the railway route on Monday to inaugurate the railway. Moscow seized Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, a move that's drawn international condemnation. The new train route is seen as a fresh step to cement Russia's grip on the region.
