Verdict The X6 spoils its passengers with a refined ride, strong engines, and a cozy interior, but its sloped roof compromises its SUV practicality. Overview The X6 is here to finish what it started. The original X6 pioneered a new styling direction for SUVS: the dramatically sloped roof, which cuts down on some cargo space for the sake of coolness. Think of it as an X5 SUV that goes to the gym. Its athletic antics transcend its looks, too. The base engine is a peppy 375 horsepower turbocharged inline-six engine that gives the X6 plenty of scoot. The M60i runs hotter, using a 523-horsepower twin-turbo V-8 that's built for pounding pavement at high speeds. Both powertrains are locked to an eight-speed automatic transmission with all-wheel drive. The 617-hp X6 M delivers a far more aggressive experience but is reviewed separately. But don't let its focus on driving entertainment skew what's really at work in the X6. It spoils its passengers with a pleasantly elegant interior complete with an enormous infotainment screen that works a high-tech command center. The X6 has inspired other SUVs, such as the Porsche Cayenne Coupe and Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class Coupe, to lower their rooflines. Which only confirms that it was the X6 that started the move to sleeker SUVs. What's New for 2024? BMW gives the X6 a makeover for 2024, with a revised front grille and bumper, new headlamps and taillamps, updated wheel designs, and a boost in power for the base engine thanks to a new 48-volt hybrid system. Output for the X6's turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine is up to 375 horsepower, but the power of the 523-hp 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 remains the same for this year. The performance-minded M60i, renamed from last year's M50i, carries the angrier engine and gets gloss-black exterior accents, quad tailpipes, and an M logo for the grille. The X6 is also now available with the Highway Assistant hands-free driving feature that we first experienced in the new 7-series flagship luxury sedan. Pricing and Which One to Buy 40i: $74,895 M60i: $94,595 Despite the burlier sounds and gutsier acceleration that the 523-hp X6 M60i provides, we don't think it's worth the staggering price gap. Instead, we'd stick with the six-cylinder X6 40i. We'd spring for the M Sport package that includes a snazzier body kit and exterior trim, an upgraded exhaust system, a sportified suspension, and a unique steering wheel. Engine, Transmission, and Performance The X6 40i is powered by a 375-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that features a 48-volt hybrid system and pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The M60i has the same transmission and all-wheel drive but its twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 is significantly more powerful. Its 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque helped it rocket to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds at our test track. What's even more shocking is that the X6 M has up to 617 horsepower and is even quicker. Still, the standard six-cylinder powertrain is plenty zippy and velvety smooth. Both the X6 40i and M60i also have standard adaptive dampers and wheel sizes that range from 20 to 22 inches. Our test of the V-8-powered X6 revealed its impressive cornering grip and stopping power. Although its suspension is firmer than the setup found on the six-cylinder X6 we tested, it was never punishing. We also appreciated its adjustable steering heft and hushed interior at cruising speed. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo Unsurprisingly, the X6's interior looks and feels like most other new BMW products. That means upscale materials and soft-touch surfaces abound, and two large 12.3-inch digital displays dominate the dashboard. While the instrument panel looks slick, the gauges are a confusing mess. Thankfully, the optional head-up display is more straightforward. The rest of the switchgear is also smartly laid out. BMW's gesture controls—which enable you to control certain functions such as audio volume by waving your hand in front of the infotainment screen—are included but unnecessary. Plenty of standard amenities are offered, too, including 16-way power-adjustable front seats, customizable ambient lighting, heated front cushions, and passive entry. 2024 BMW X6 M Starting at $128.195 Highs Effortless speed, luxurious cabin, Competition package is now standard. Lows Ride quality can be harsh, less space and visibility than the X5 M, the X5 M costs less too. Verdict The X6 M SUV is a bad-ass that can devour almost everything else on the road—SUV or otherwise—and that alone is reason to love it. Overview The BMW X6 M is a sloped-back brute-ute that packs a potent punch. It balances its high-octane antics with an interior that wraps its occupants in rich materials and a wealth of standard features. The X6 M offers much of the same content as its conventional looking sibling, the X5 M SUV, but thanks to its fastback roofline does so with slightly less cargo space and slightly more style. Propulsion is generated by a twin-turbo V-8 fitted with a hybrid system, which churns out 617 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. We’ve lauded the X6 M for its effortless speed and aggressive handling, and BMW claims that it's smoothed the edge off of its famously rocky ride this year. We’ll see. At the very least, we feel certain that the X6 M still has the chops to remain competitive against the likes of the Audi RS Q8 and Porsche Cayenne Coupe. What's New for 2024? BMW has given the X6 M a facelift for the 2024 model year, complete with revised sheet metal that creates a more chiseled look, crisp exterior lighting elements, a spruced-up interior with a new curved center display, and a new V-8 engine and eight-speed transmission fitted with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. Additionally, the X6 M is now offered exclusively as a Competition model with 617 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. The German marque has outfitted the high-performance fastback SUV with other enhancements, too, including new carbon shift paddles, more standard safety tech, an M-specific version of iDrive, and more. There are also three new colors: Brooklyn Grey Metallic, Isle of Man Green Metallic, and Frozen Pure Grey Metallic. Pricing and Which One to Buy X6 M Competition: $128,195 It's hard to fathom how less practicality can command a higher price. Still, the 2023 X6 M costs more than its squareback counterpart, the X5 M. We prefer the less expensive body style, but the X6 certainly attracts more attention. Every X6 M built for the 2024 model year forward will be a Competition model, as the package content is now standard. This means every model gets the same 617 horsepower from the hybridized twin-turbo V-8 engine along with an adaptive M suspension, 21-inch front and 22-inch rear wheels, a panoramic roof, Harman Kardon audio system, a drive recorder and a slew of safety tech. We’d be inclined to spec our X6 M in the brilliant Isle Of Man Green Metallic and tick the box for the Executive Package, which adds luxurious features like soft-close automatic doors, LED lighting for the panoramic roof, heated-and-cooled cupholders, front ventilated massaging seats, front and rear heated seats, and rear manual side window shades. Engine, Transmission, and Performance The X6 M is motivated by a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 that’s paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, which incorporates an electric motor mounted in the eight-speed automatic transmission. Combined output is the same 617 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque generated by earlier, non-hybrid Competition models. We’ve yet to get behind the wheel of the new hybridized version, which means we haven’t run it through our instrumented testing regimen either. That said, we expect the performance to at least match or exceed pre-facelift models. During our previous drive in the X6 M Competition, we lauded its lightning-quick acceleration, staggering cornering grip, and strong, fade-free brakes. While it rode smooth and steady on the highway, its large wheels and stiff springs contributed to a rocky ride on uneven roads. We appreciate the fact that this drivetrain can be told to distribute power to all four wheels for maximum traction or have most of it sent rearward for sharper handling. In addition to its selectable drive modes, including customizable settings that can be activated via steering-wheel-mounted buttons, the X6 M even features adjustable brake-pedal feedback. 👋 In todays review we check out the 2023 BMW X6 xDrive40i and what an SUV this is!! It is stylish on the exterior, being mostly white with the staggered wheels and black accents, it gives it such a great look! The steep rake to the rear glass not only provides a great coupe like design, but also doesn't hinder interior spacer or rear seat passenger head room! The rest of the interior is spot on with premium feeling materials like carbon fiber, brushed aluminum and heated leather seats! It has a ton of standard safety features and a lot of information in general that can be easily controlled in the center infotainment system! The driving aspect to this car is really where it shines! BMW is known for making really good handling sportscars, and they do a great job of bringing over that sportiness to the SUV lineup! The 2023 BMW X6 xdrive40i drives very nice even without the adaptive suspension! It handles well for it's weight and the paddles are even very responsive which is nice to see! This would be a great daily driver for sure!! The 2023 BMW X6 xDrive40i is the best blend between wanting a sportscar, but also needing the practicality of an SUV along with even being able to tow which is great to see from this sporty coupe like SUV! This is also more on the base level for the X6 as you can also go with the X6 M Competition which we have also reviewed! The long, swooping roofline and crisp contour lines create a dynamically stretched silhouette. As on the X5, the new X6 features slim headlight units with arrow-shaped daytime driving light elements. The dynamic intent of the new BMW X6 is futher highlighted by the now standard M Sport package, distinguished by an octagonal design element below the BMW kidney grille, prominent side apertures, and generous use of black surfaces. M-specific side skirts and M High-gloss Shadowline trim express the athletic character of the new BMW X6. The taut surfacing of the flanks and muscular shoulder lines transition smoothly into a powerful design at the rear. The slim taillights reach far into the tailgate, and their light signature is defined by the familiar L-shape of the rear light and brake light bars. At the top of their respective model ranges, the new BMW X5 M60i xDrive and BMW X6 M60i xDrive feature unique design details. Features including double bars and an M logo for the BMW kidney grille, M exterior mirror caps in high-gloss black, and exhaust tailpipe trim in a quad-pipe style speak to the high performance attributes of the 8-cylinder models. The new BMW X6 M60i xDrive also has a subtle rear spoiler in high-gloss black. The M Sport Professional package can be added as an enhancement to any X5 or X6 model already equipped with the M Sport package. Visually, the M Sport Professional package adds a kidney grille surround in matte black, exhaust tailpipe trim in black chrome, and darkened M Shadowline lights. Also included in the M Sport Professional package, are M Sport brakes with a choice of red or blue calipers, and an M Sport exhaust system (standard on the M60i models, not available for the BMW X5 xDrive50e). New paint colors include Marina Bay Blue metallic for the X5 M60i xDrive and Isle of Man Green metallic for the X6 M60i xDrive. Blue Ridge Mountain metallic, Brooklyn Grey metallic, Skyscraper Grey metallic and Frozen Pure Grey metallic are new additions to the color range. From the start of production, customers will be able to choose from around 40 BMW Individual special paintwork shades for their new BMW X5 and new BMW X6. These exclusive paint options are applied by hand in a meticulous process and the spectrum of colors is being expanded all the time. The fully digital BMW Curved Display is at the heart of the interior redesign for the new BMW X5 and new BMW X6. It is made up of a 12.3-inch information display behind the steering wheel and a control display with a screen diagonal of 14.9 inches – both located behind a single glass surface. The touch control functionality of the BMW control display has brought about a significant reduction in the number of buttons and controls in favor of digital control for various functions. The newly designed dashboard serves as the perfect stage for the BMW Curved Display. Its horizontal structure emphasises the width of the cabin, while the surfacing in standard leather-like Sensafin deepens the premium character of the interior. The central air vents in the new BMW X5 and new BMW X6 are extremely slim and integrated into the instrument panel almost out of sight. Interior light distribution, brightness, and choice of 15 colors can be configured via the iDrive menu. The ambient lighting system’s range of functions also includes the Welcome Light Carpet – which projects an unique graphic on the ground alongside the vehicle when the doors are unlocked or opened – and pulsating light signals that appear on the inner panelling of an open door when the engine is running. A thoroughly updated range of engines, newly enhanced with electrification, enables the new BMW X5 and BMW X6 to deliver driving pleasure with greater poise, assurance, and efficiency. The UNBEATABLE New 2024 BMW X6! The Best Sportback SUV..? The new BMW X6 SUV's changes for the 2024 model year reveal a thorough refresh with revamped styling, powertrain changes, new paint colors, and more options. But what are some of the details? Let’s dive right in.. Every 2024 X6 gets the M Sport package, complete with the blacked-out center portion of the front bumper, aggressive air intakes, and the adaptive M suspension. Other styling revisions include a larger kidney grille and new headlights with DRLs styled like twin outward-facing arrows, doubling as turn signals. There are a few new paint colors, and the kidney grille can now optionally be illuminated. The taillights and wheel designs are new as well. The new X6 comes with the most thorough update since the third-generation model launched in 2020. Cockpit tech upgrades mark the most significant changes, but BMW polishes the ends and enhances the three powertrain options in the three models, xDrive40i, M60i, and X6 M Competition. The 2024 X6 comes standard with all-wheel drive and an M Sport package that blows out the front end with a large octagonal lower grille grimacing below the classic kidney grille above it. The X6’s new LED headlights integrate daytime running lights that double as turn indicators winking at the edges. The tall air intakes box the front ends, and the X6 dons more black trim pieces, but the biggest differentiator between the X6 and X5 rides on the roofline and the rear. The X6 rounds into the raked tailgate like a fastback. Slim tail lights hug the ends and stop before the BMW roundel in the center of the tailgate, and rear vents bulge out the ends. BMWs are all about performance, and the X6 is self-consciously sportier looking than its upright X5 sibling. Big SUVs aren't meant to be caned around a race track, but a certain degree of athleticism is expected from one with the BMW roundel on the nose, and even more so for one with a sleek coupe-like profile, namely the X6. The X6 sticks to the BMW playbook and is a pleasingly engaging drive with high grip levels and excellent body control. Thankfully, even the base six-cylinder X6 handles and rides well, and with its newfound power, it gets you to 60 mph in little over 5 seconds, so it's such a great package that you really don't need the expensive V8 X6M. The M60i is a great car if you want your SUV to be sporty, but you pay a $20k premium for the privilege. The all new xDrive40i model gains the adaptive M Suspension this year, improving handling even further while maintaining decent ride quality, which is not something that can be said of the harsh X6 M. The newly standard rear-axle steering also aids the M60i's agility and stability. The test of the V-8-powered X6 revealed its impressive cornering grip and stopping power. Now, even though its suspension is much firmer than the setup found on the six-cylinder, still, it was never punishing. Both the 40i and M60i also have standard adaptive dampers and wheel sizes that range from 20 to 22 inches. In a market where having the ability to pull is frequently given minimal importance, the X6 offers an exceptional towing capacity. The interior marks the biggest changes for the 2024 X6. A horizontal theme stretches across the dash with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster along with a 14.9-inch touchscreen curving under a single pane of glass toward the driver. Most of the climate control buttons migrate into the touchscreen, leaving only a tiny band of controls for the hazards, defrosters, and volume knob. A controller dial and drive mode buttons remain in the console, which now has a push button gear selector instead of a lever. The slim center vents underscored by a light bar sit in between the touchscreen and climate bar before illuminating to the corners. Thankfully, the head-up display is simpler and optional. The layout of the remaining switchgear is also shrewd. Even though it's not necessary, BMW's gesture controls let you change the level of your music by just waving your hand in front of the X6's infotainment screen. There are also several standard features available, such as heated front seats, ambient lighting that can be customised, 16-way power adjustable front seats, and passive entry. Even though it is pretty comfortable for two adults, the back seat's headroom and legroom are reduced by around 2 and 3 inches, compared with the boxier X5. Likewise, the X6 has less cargo volume behind the rear seats. In the test, it only held 9 carry-on suitcases back there; the X5 handled 11. Apple CarPlay along with Android Auto are both included in the 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system that is standard. Lows X6 is more affordable and practical, M50i requires a major price leap, labyrinthine infotainment menus. Verdict Although the X6 is a taste of fashion over function, its smooth power and smart interior ease the burden of beauty. Overview Numbers are a funny thing, and in the realm of BMW nomenclature, the X5 SUV is actually a bigger and more practical barge than the sloped-roof X6. In many ways, the X6 behaves like a thick 3-series in high heels. Powered by either a 335-hp inline-six engine (40i) or a feistier 523-hp twin-turbo V-8 (M50i), the X6 deploys power with the same smoothness of shaving cream. For more power, seek the X6 M with up to 617 horsepower (reviewed separately). Although the X6’s exterior proportions look misshapen, the interior is elegant and functional. The fashionably slanted roof sacrifices some headroom and storage space, but those who prefer its striking looks above all else are unlikely to mind its higher price tag over the X5. What's New for 2023? BMW makes no major changes to the X6 for 2023. Pricing and Which One to Buy X6 40i: $71,095 X6 M50i: $90,095 Despite the burlier sounds and gutsier acceleration that the 523-hp X6 M50i provides, we don't think it’s worth $20,000 extra. Instead, we'd stick with the six-cylinder X6 40i, which comes standard with all-wheel drive. We'd spring for the M Sport package that includes a snazzier body kit and exterior trim, an upgraded exhaust system, a retuned suspension, and a unique steering wheel. The Luxury Seating package is a solid value that adds ventilated front seats with extra power adjustments and massage functions. Those in cold-weather locales like us will appreciate the new Climate Comfort package. It includes four-zone climate control, heated seats in both rows, and a heated steering wheel and armrests. Engine, Transmission, and Performance The X6 40i is powered by a 335-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that features a 48-volt hybrid system and pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The M50i has the same transmission and all-wheel drive, too, but its twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 is significantly more powerful. Its 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque helped it rocket to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds at our test track. What's even more shocking is that the X6 M has up to 617 horsepower and is even quicker. Still, the standard six-cylinder powertrain is plenty quick and velvety smooth. Both the X6 40i and M50i also have standard adaptive dampers and wheel sizes that range from 20 to 22 inches. Our test of the V-8-powered X6 revealed its impressive cornering grip and stopping power. Although its suspension is firmer than the setup found on the six-cylinder X6 we tested, it was never punishing. We also appreciated its adjustable steering heft and hushed interior at cruising speed. Towing and Payload Capacity The X6 has an impressive towing capacity in a segment where pulling capability is often a low priority. When optioned with the available towing package the maximum towing capacity for the X6 is 7200 pounds. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG The all-wheel-drive-only X6 40i is rated at 21 mpg in the city and 25 on the highway. The much more powerful twin-turbo V-8 X6 M50i is rated at 16 mpg city and 22 highway. While the six-cylinder X6 exceeded the government's expectations on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route—part of our extensive testing regimen—earning 29 mpg highway, the M50i missed its mark by 2 mpg in the same test. For more information about the X6's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo Unsurprisingly, the X6’s interior looks and feels like most other new BMW products. That means upscale materials and soft-touch surfaces abound, and two large 12.3-inch digital displays dominate the dashboard. While the instrument panel looks slick, the gauges are a confusing mess. Thankfully, the optional head-up display is more straightforward. The rest of the switchgear is also smartly laid out. BMW's gesture controls—which enable you to control certain functions such as audio volume by waving your hand in front of the infotainment screen—are included but unnecessary. Plenty of standard amenities are offered, too, including 16-way power-adjustable front seats, customizable ambient lighting, heated front cushions, and passive entry. While the back seat is comfortable for two adults, its legroom and headroom shrink by about 2 and 3 inches, respectively, compared with the boxier X5. I forgot to mention that the side sill gets rubbed getting out of the X6 which is starting to leave a scuff mark. Anyways, all minor things. The X6 is awesome. The long, swooping roofline and crisp contour lines create a dynamically stretched silhouette. As on the X5, the new X6 features slim headlight units with arrow-shaped daytime driving light elements. The dynamic intent of the new BMW X6 is futher highlighted by the now standard M Sport package, distinguished by an octagonal design element below the BMW kidney grille, prominent side apertures, and generous use of black surfaces. M-specific side skirts and M High-gloss Shadowline trim express the athletic character of the new BMW X6. The taut surfacing of the flanks and muscular shoulder lines transition smoothly into a powerful design at the rear. The slim taillights reach far into the tailgate, and their light signature is defined by the familiar L-shape of the rear light and brake light bars. At the top of their respective model ranges, the new BMW X5 M60i xDrive and BMW X6 M60i xDrive feature unique design details. Features including double bars and an M logo for the BMW kidney grille, M exterior mirror caps in high-gloss black, and exhaust tailpipe trim in a quad-pipe style speak to the high performance attributes of the 8-cylinder models. The new BMW X6 M60i xDrive also has a subtle rear spoiler in high-gloss black. The M Sport Professional package can be added as an enhancement to any X5 or X6 model already equipped with the M Sport package. Visually, the M Sport Professional package adds a kidney grille surround in matte black, exhaust tailpipe trim in black chrome, and darkened M Shadowline lights. Also included in the M Sport Professional package, are M Sport brakes with a choice of red or blue calipers, and an M Sport exhaust system (standard on the M60i models, not available for the BMW X5 xDrive50e). New paint colors include Marina Bay Blue metallic for the X5 M60i xDrive and Isle of Man Green metallic for the X6 M60i xDrive. Blue Ridge Mountain metallic, Brooklyn Grey metallic, Skyscraper Grey metallic and Frozen Pure Grey metallic are new additions to the color range. From the start of production, customers will be able to choose from around 40 BMW Individual special paintwork shades for their new BMW X5 and new BMW X6. These exclusive paint options are applied by hand in a meticulous process and the spectrum of colors is being expanded all the time. The fully digital BMW Curved Display is at the heart of the interior redesign for the new BMW X5 and new BMW X6. It is made up of a 12.3-inch information display behind the steering wheel and a control display with a screen diagonal of 14.9 inches – both located behind a single glass surface. The touch control functionality of the BMW control display has brought about a significant reduction in the number of buttons and controls in favor of digital control for various functions. The newly designed dashboard serves as the perfect stage for the BMW Curved Display. Its horizontal structure emphasises the width of the cabin, while the surfacing in standard leather-like Sensafin deepens the premium character of the interior. The central air vents in the new BMW X5 and new BMW X6 are extremely slim and integrated into the instrument panel almost out of sight. Another new interior feature is the ambient light bar with crystalline surface structure and crisp LED backlighting integrated below the trim element in the front passenger area. Interior light distribution, brightness, and choice of 15 colors can be configured via the iDrive menu. The ambient lighting system’s range of functions also includes the Welcome Light Carpet – which projects an unique graphic on the ground alongside the vehicle when the doors are unlocked or opened – and pulsating light signals that appear on the inner panelling of an open door when the engine is running. A thoroughly updated range of engines, newly enhanced with electrification, enables the new BMW X5 and BMW X6 to deliver driving pleasure with greater poise, assurance, and efficiency. The V8 engines in the M60i models now benefit from 48V mild-hybrid technology, while the new X5 xDrive50e plug-in hybrid gains an extensively upgraded combustion engine and BMW eDrive technology that endows it with nearly 100 more horsepower while increasing the range of purely electric driving by 10 miles.
