This shelter is perfect for survival, the surrounding wildlife provides opportunities for long term survival, a good river full of fish, we have carp in this episode. I recently renovated the abandoned 100 square foot garage in my back garden in preparation for moving in. It has suffered a lot of neglect over the years so a lot of work was needed to get it move in ready. Electric was already supplied to the building and I had water lines added before starting. A lot of prep work was needed before moving in, including cleaning, sanding, painting, laying the floor, installing the kitchen and designing the interior. The end result still surprises me with how comfortable and functional it is.

The Kinugawa Onsen was once known as a nice onsen resort convenient from Tokyo. During Japan’s “bubble economy” of 30-35 years ago, around 3.41 million tourists visited this area every year. During that time, there was a surge of group travelers, including those taking part in company trips. Quite a lot of new hotels and ryokan were built to meet such demand. However, after the bubble burst, the economy took a dive and fewer companies arranged trips for their employees. In addition, with more and more other types of leisure and super sento bathhouse prevalence, tourists visiting Kinugawa Onsen gradually decreased in number. Initially built with large sums of investment money, the hotels and ryokan struggled to keep their heads above water. The final blow came when the local banks that supported the region went bankrupt. Additionally, upon sustaining damage from the Great East Japan Earthquake and from torrential rains and floods, they were ultimately forced to shut down their businesses for good. Why are the buildings still there? That’s because a considerable amount of money is needed to demolish the buildings, and many of the owners have vanished. As the demolition should otherwise be funded by citizen tax money, it is in reality difficult. And the fact that some abandoned buildings are located above hot spring sources, or adjacent to national routes and rivers, also make demolition difficult. This entire subdivision was bought out by a developer to built over 100 homes worth approx. 3 million dollars each. They striped most of the homes and boarded them up. For a short time they were left abandoned waiting to be demolished. First the developer clear cut all the trees. Next they started demolishing each house. I had permission to explore and film only 2 homes here as the others was boarded and sealed up. The private subdivision was built in the 1980’s. Most of the homes sit on 2 acres of land. The developer bought each home for approx. 3 million dollars each. This works out to be approx. 42 million dollars for the whole subdivision. I was shocked to find out this farmhouse was built in 1829 and the previous owner was a Doctor and worked as the Medical Officer of Health. The house was later sold to a developer in 2016 and was rented out for a short time. The police was once called to this house for a violent assault. It now sits abandoned and the future of this historic home is unknown. The neighboring villagers often shared stories about the peculiar rituals of the family. Many believed the family held mysterious abilities. Legends whispered of a curse that kept the family tethered to this grand residence. The last descendant of the de Villefort name had aspirations of expanding their empire in America but met a tragic fate aboard the Titanic in 1912. With his demise, the chateau fell into obscurity, and the influence of the de the powerful family diminished. Fast forward to 2022, the once-forgotten chateau has a new guardian. Sometimes, exploring doesn't go as planned. This was one of those times. This homeless man led us to a building that he knew was surrounded around trouble and security because he was mad that we were in the building that he was living in. We explained ourselves to the security guards and they ended up being pretty chill with us, but they also told of all the dangers in the building we were in. So, needless to say, DONT go to that building.
