Samulnori is a modernized format of traditional Korean drumming called nongak or pungmul.
사물놀이 : Samulnori is music played on the four basic Korean percussion instruments: the ggoenggwari (a small gong), the jing (a large gong), the janggo (an hourglass drum), and the buk (a barrel drum). Though derived from traditional Korean famers'' music, samulnori itself is a fairly recent phenomenon, having begun in 1978 with the establishment of the very first Samulnory band by Kim Duck-soo. It became popular and spread quickly as a new genre of music. This highly creative, exhilarating, joyful music is now performed on stages throughout the world.

Samulnori Samulnori plays the same four instruments as Nongak players (Kkwaenggwari, Jingo, Jango, and Buk). Originally, there are two sets of Buddhist ritual instruments called objects. One of them is Beopgo (a large drum made of cowhide, originally played in front of Buddha). Unpan (which was originally in the kitchen with a tapping board and was intended to inform the monks of the meal time), (I hit it when I read the scriptures in the shape of a hollow wooden carp), And it's a large bell. used in Buddhist dance called pan-pae. Instruments are also called objects, and they are gong, drum, taepyeongso and wooden table. Samulnori, which enjoyed Korean society in the 1980s, was played outdoors. It is adapted to suit the modern indoor stage. Although instead of dancing and drumming nonstop like nongak, There is a difference in taking the stage form of a sitting class (which means sitting against standing nongak). He was a descendant of Namsadang and was called the Twilled Sky of Janggu from early on. Kim Deok-soo brings together his colleagues from Namsadangpae. Nongak, a rhythmic music, was developed as a chamber music concerto style. The song is usually played on the right side of Honam Udo Nongak.Jjakdoreum. Seoljanggo nori.Binari, pangut, etc. Nongak's lively musicality and meticulous performance made a surprising sensation. Jazz, concerto, rock.He also performed in other genres, including pop orchestras and modern dance music. The most Korean and enterprising aspect of Samulnori is not only in Korea but also in Korea. It has become more popular overseas, making it a samulnori fan club around the world. "Samulnorian" came into being, and in Korea, Several samulnori performance groups, including "National Gugak Center Samulnori," were formed. Several perceptual shifts have been made in Samulnori's re-creation of traditional art. One: Pungmulgut, which was played in the yard, was raised to the stage. If Pungmulgut, which was traditionally practiced in open spaces, had a strong character of 'play', Samulnori transformed it into a more artistically centralized form. Second: Therefore, musical characteristics are emphasized in Samulnori. Each repertoire is played in a consistent form, and the playing time is unchanged in a large framework. Third: It opened the way for creation that was not bound by localities or transgressors. Before that, I'd like to hear the melody, dance, and so on. The dissolution of the rhythm of Pungmulgut, which had been gradually changed, It was able to enter the path of full-scale re-creation through re-construction and other processes. Object Instrument Description Go. Kkwaenggwari. There are aliases for kkwaeng, kkwaeng, donggo, salt, and paddles. The person who plays the kkwaenggwari is often referred to as the person who plays the kkwaenggwari, especially the person who leads the pungmul band by hitting the iron at the front is called Sangsoe. Sangsoe is the most famous pungmul band. It occupies an important position. Kkwaenggwari is made of brass, and depending on its tone, the male kkwaenggwari has a thin and high sound, but the female kkwaenggwari has a soft and shallow sound. The game played by the male and female as if the female birds and the male birds were responding to each other, making it the best rhythm instrument in harmony. It was previously used in military music and ritual music, but now it plays a leading role in genre. Me. Book. The North has a long history and can see the outbreak in all parts of the world because its structure is simple. Each developed to have its own characteristics. In the East, traces of the outbreak can also be seen in India and China. Various varieties have been introduced in Korea depending on the location of the instrument, and the drum is believed to be the best instrument among the Pungmul instruments, because it is the simplest structured instrument that can be made during the herding period before the Bronze Age. C. gong One of the percussion instruments made of brass is the gong, which is solidified by the name "jeong" or gong, and is nicknamed "gochujing" due to its use in the ancient military music, Gochuak, and I, Geumra, etc. The range of use is wide, so it is used in chitas, martial arts, and pungmul, as well as Buddhist temples. D. Janggu It is a type of leather percussion instrument with a large head on both sides and a thin waist, so it is also called a 腰). The north side (left side) is made of white horse leather or cowhide, which is a bit thick and low-sound, and the whip side (postal side) is usually made of horse leather, making the leather thin and high-sounding The video was filmed with Dolby Vision and binaural recording to enhance the sense of scene.

[OPEN STAGE 2018: SAMULNORI] The Origin Story Exactly 40 years ago, on February 22, 1978, in a small theater in downtown Seoul named Space Theater, the 1st official “Evening of Korean Traditional Music” took place. It was at this momentous event that the folk performance group, titled Sinawi with members Duk Soo Kim (janggu), Yong Bae Kim (kkwanggari), Jong Dae Lee (buk, piri), and Tae Hyeon Kim (jing, haegeum) was invited. Their performance of Namsadang Nori (literally the ‘all-male vagabond clown theatre’), traditionally presented outdoors, was reinvented as an indoor performance for this event, and thus, “samulnori” was born. In September of the year 1978, Duk Soo Kim, Kwang Soo Lee, Jong Sil Choi, and Yong Bae Kim, considered the four founders of samulnori, gathered once more in the Space Theater. This time, Korean folklore scholar Woosung Shim had bestowed on these four the name “SamulNori” (as a new genre and as a group name). Since the genre's creation 40 years ago, it has sparked a renaissance in Korea’s music scene and garnered worldwide acclaim. With its strong ties to keeping the harmony and balance of nature and man, there couldn't be a more opportune time to learn about samulnori! Stay in touch to learn more about where/how to watch amazing samulnori performances in New York and surrounding areas in 2018! 🤍koreanculture.org
